Murder of Susan Waring

April 13, 2021

Barristers from Exchange Chambers have acted for the prosecution and defence in the trial of Alan Edwards, 48, who has been jailed for life, with a minimum term of 27 years, for the murder of Susan Waring, 45, and 19 offences of historic violence against females spanning a period of 24 years.

For the prosecution, Christopher Tehrani Q.C. led David Temkin Q.C., with Alexandra Sutton acting as disclosure counsel. They were instructed by CPS North West.

For the defence, John Jones Q.C., led Mark Stephenson. They were instructed by Garry Leaver, of Farleys Solicitors.

Alan Edwards claimed Susan Waring kissed him goodbye and walked out of his property in Darwen, Lancashire before disappearing in January 2019. The jury unanimously convicted Alan Edwards of the murder, and the other 19 offences, after hearing evidence that he had struck Susan Waring from close range while wearing a latex skull mask.

During the trial at Preston Crown Court, the prosecution described Alan Edwards as a “violent bully” who had murdered Susan Waring before disposing of her body, which has never been found.

Christopher Tehrani QC, David Temkin QC, Alexandra Sutton, John Jones QC and Mark Stephenson are all members of the criminal team at Exchange Chambers.
