Julian King secures acquittal for client who maintained innocence throughout money laundering trial

February 12, 2024

Julian King has represented a defendant accused of receiving monies emanating from a VAT repayment fraud, during a trial at Leeds Crown Court.

The defendant ran the call centre operation of a number of solar panel and green energy companies. Her co-defendant partner was a named director, whilst a further co-defendant director, had pleaded guilty before trial.

The jury heard evidence spanning several years of trading activity in the case brought by Her Majesties Revenue and Customs (HMRC). It heard that the companies received VAT repayments following claims made by the companies in excess of £1.5 million. Mr King’s client maintained she neither knew or suspected monies she received came from criminal conduct.

After three weeks the jury returned a not guilty verdict in respect of Mr King’s client. Her co-defendant partner was found guilty on all counts of Cheating the Public Revenue and Money Laundering.

Julian King was instructed by Laura Smith of Cartwright King Solicitors.
