Supreme Court Success For Bill Hanbury

Bill Hanbury from Exchange Chambers has helped to secure an important victory for his client at the Supreme Court.

Judgment in the case of R (on the application of Barkas) (Appellant) v North Yorkshire County Council and Another (Respondents) [2014] UKSC31 has been handed down today.

Commenting on the judgment, Bill Hanbury, who acted for the second respondent, Scarborough Borough Council, said:

“We (the respondents) were not only successful but their Lordships overturned an earlier decision of the House of Lords made only ten years ago.

“The case completely transforms the law from a state of uncertainty to one of clarity and will be of great importance to local authorities.”
