Professional Negligence 2026 Seminar – Manchester

We are pleased announce our Professional Negligence Seminar 2026. This event will be held in our Leeds, Manchester Liverpool Chambers on the 6th, 7th and 8th October.

Registration is from 09:00, with breakfast to be served at 10:00, and the final talk to finish up at 11:30, followed by questions and close.

The seminar will consist of three 30-minute talks from members of the Exchange Chambers Professional Negligence Team.

9:00 – 9:15: Registration

9:15 – 9:30: Welcome Talk from James Malam

9:30 – 10:00: John Waiting: The principle in White v Jones – how far does it extend? This talk will discuss the decision of the House of Lords in White v Jones [1995] 2 AC 207 in relation to claims by disappointed beneficiaries under negligently drawn wills, and the extent to which the principle has been extended to other situations

10:00 – 10:30: Breakfast

10:30 – 11:00: Steven Fennell: “Limitation Update: A review of recent cases including Kay v Martineau Johnson [2026] EWCA Civ 224 on s. 14A Limitation Act 1980 and special limitation periods triggered by the claimant’s knowledge”

11:00 – 11:30: Louis Browne KC: ‘A survey of valuers negligence from Merivale Moore Plc v Strutt & Parker [2000] PNLR 498 to Bratt v Jones [2025] PNLR 24.This talk will consider what the present state of the law is in this area by an analysis of the key authorities. It will consider whether it remains necessary for a claimant to surmount the two stage test of bracket breach and Bolam negligence in order to succeed. It will also provide guidance on how to advance claims for valuers negligence and potential wider implications for other professionals.
