Susan Filson, one of the UK’s most highly regarded physiotherapy expert witnesses, will be speaking alongside barrister Chris Allen in an upcoming specialist talk on:
“Recovering the Cost of Hydrotherapy Pools at Home – Law and Practical Tips for Maximising Recovery.”
The session is aimed at personal injury and clinical negligence practitioners, as well as rehabilitation professionals, and will provide a comprehensive and practical update on this complex and increasingly contested head of loss.
Sue Filson brings significant clinical expertise to the discussion, including her role as the expert physiotherapist in the important High Court decision of CCC v Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust [2023] EWHC 1770 (KB)—a leading authority on claims for home hydrotherapy pools.
In that case, her evidence played a key role in the Court’s acceptance of the clinical need for a home hydrotherapy pool, with the Court placing weight on first‑hand therapeutic insight, functional outcomes, and real‑world rehabilitation evidence.
Speaking together in an interview-style format, Chris Allen and Sue Filson will explore:
• The legal framework governing recovery of hydrotherapy pool costs
• Key battlegrounds such as necessity, reasonableness, and alternative provision
• The clinical rationale underpinning hydrotherapy interventions
• Practical guidance on building and evidencing a successful claim
• Common pitfalls in expert evidence and cross‑examination
The session will combine legal analysis with hands‑on clinical experience, offering attendees clear, practical strategies to maximise the prospects of recovery in appropriate cases.
Chris Allen, who will lead on the legal aspects of the discussion, commented:
“Claims for home hydrotherapy pools are often contentious and highly fact-sensitive. This session is designed to bridge the gap between legal principle and clinical reality, ensuring practitioners are equipped to present these cases effectively. Hydrotherapy can deliver meaningful functional and quality‑of‑life benefits where conventional therapy cannot. The key is evidencing those benefits clearly and safely, in a way that meets the Court’s requirements.”
This event provides a valuable opportunity to hear directly from a leading expert witness involved in one of the most significant recent cases in this field, alongside specialist legal analysis.
