Rachel Coyle publishes new book on archaeology, heritage and the law
September 30, 2026
Rachel Coyle from Exchange Chambers has published her latest book – A Practical Guide to Archaeology, Heritage and its Interaction with the Law in England and Wales.
Published by Law Brief Publishing, the book brings together the different areas of law relating to archaeology and heritage in one practical guide.
England’s landscape contains evidence of successive civilisations, from Roman architecture and Saxon artefacts to medieval burial grounds. For developers, landowners and their professional advisers, the discovery of historically significant remains can raise a range of legal and practical issues.
Rachel’s book looks at the legal framework governing these issues and the interaction between common law principles and statutory provisions.
Areas covered include property, planning and archaeology; heritage protection and listed building consent; ancient monuments and archaeological areas; human remains; treasure; shipwrecks and military remains; and the role of public libraries, museums and galleries.
Commenting on the book, Rachel said:
“Archaeology and heritage raise some fascinating legal questions, but the relevant law is spread across a number of different areas.
“I wanted to bring these together in one book and provide a practical guide to some of the issues that can arise.
“I hope it will be useful to lawyers and other professionals who come across these issues in practice, as well as those who want to understand more about archaeology and heritage.”
The book is suitable for conveyancers, developers, local government lawyers, surveyors and those with a wider interest in heritage.
