Practice Overview

Nick has specialised in financial remedy work for over 40 years.  From 1983 until 2016 he practised from 29 Bedford Row (Chambers moved to Bedford Row from the Temple, via Grays Inn, in 1991). 

Nick took silk in 2002 and had a substantial practice in Liverpool and Manchester, as well as in London.  For many years he was listed by The Legal 500 and Chambers Directory in the top bracket of silks practising matrimonial finance/financial remedy work. 

Nick was one of the pioneers of private FDRs, which have now become established practice in the larger financial remedy cases.  He was one of the first barristers to qualify as an Arbitrator pursuant to the (then brand new) IFLA scheme.  He is also qualified as an Arbitrator to hear private law children cases. 

Nick was appointed a Recorder in 1999, and sat part time as a Recorder in the Crown Court and he sat in Civil and Family work in the County Courts.  In 2006 he was appointed a Deputy High Court Judge and became a full time High Court Judge in 2016, assigned to the Family Division. 

During his time as a High Court Judge, Nick presided over many high value financial remedy cases, in addition to Public Law care work and child abduction cases.  He was also appointed a Judge of the Court of Protection.  Nick was the Presiding Family Law Judge for Wales from 2017 until 2022 and the Presiding Family Judge for London from 2022 until 2024. 

Nick retired from the High Court bench in 2024 in order to return to the area of non court dispute resolution, in particular Arbitration and private FDRs.  He brings with him a wealth of experience both as a barrister and as a Judge. He has a reputation for being able to solve some of the most apparently intractable cases, enabling parties to remain out of the public eye and to avoid the cost, both financial and emotional, of drawn out court proceedings.
