Professor David Milman is a Professor Emeritus of Law at Lancaster University, which he joined in 2005, and where he held the post of Head of Department at the Law School between 2008 and 2011. He retired from Lancaster in January 2024. Previously, he had been at the University of Manchester where he was Dean of Law between 1995 and 1997. He renewed his links with Manchester in 2025 and became an Honorary Professor in Law within the School of Social Sciences.
He is Co-author of the Annotated Guide to Insolvency Legislation (now in its 28th edition). He was General Editor of Insolvency Intelligence until December 2021 and was also a consultant editor of Sweet and Maxwell’s Company Law Newsletter. He remains a Consultant Editor of the Bankruptcy and Personal Insolvency Reports.
His research interests lie in the fields of company law, insolvency law, international business law and partnership law. He has carried out funded research for the DTI, the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants, the Insolvency Lawyers’ Association, the Centre for Business Performance at the ICAEW and by insolvency practitioners.
His current research focus is in the area of bankruptcy law and personal credit and he is also working on corporate law reform and the problems of convergence in national systems of Company Law.
He has worked closely with the Insolvency Service on its July 2022 Call for Evidence on Personal Insolvency Law Reform.
In 2010, Professor David Milman formalised his relationship with Exchange Chambers by joining us as a Professorial Associate.
