James has a growing Criminal practice in the Crown Court acting for both the Prosecution as a Grade 1 Prosecutor and for Defendants. He also appears in the Magistrates and Youth Courts.

He has acted for both the Prosecution and Defence in preliminary matters, sentencing hearings, and appeals against conviction and sentence. He has received instructions to appear in the Crown Court on matters involving violence, dishonesty, drugs and sexual offences.

With a developing practice and interest in regulatory work, James has prosecuted for the DVSA and the Insolvency Service. He also recently defended a client in a nationally publicised RSPCA prosecution.

Alongside regulatory work, James also has experience of Proceeds of Crime matters where he recently successfully defended a Crown application to increase the available amount which would have resulted in the forced sale of the Defendant’s family home.

A large part of James’s criminal practice involves motoring offences. Recent cases of this nature have included:

  • The successful prosecution of an appeal against conviction involving the use of a mobile phone whilst driving;
  • Persuading the Motoring Court not to exercise their discretion to disqualify a driver for speeding over 100mph;
  • Mitigating on behalf of a defendant in a dangerous driving matter involving a protracted daylight police chase;
  • Prosecuting an appeal against sentence following a conviction for the offence of overloading a lorry.

James also has experience of the Youth Court, and recently defended a 14-year-old on theft and criminal damage charges achieving conditional discharges on all 5 offences.
