Health and Safety

Michael has a strong Health and Safety practice, prosecuting on behalf of Local Authorities and defending large organisations. Food Hygiene is an area of particular interest and he has been instructed for the prosecution and defence, Booths fined after PNE chair ate poisoned tongue (blackpoolgazette.co.uk).

Michael has been instructed in Section 2 Health and Safety prosecutions arising from injuries/fatalities in the workplace, and in the consequent Inquests; Jane Bell pool death: Dalmeny Hotel in St Annes fined £100,000 – BBC News.

Michael has been instructed in cases attracting widespread publicity, for example the defence of a Prison Officer (Instructed by the POA) who had been prosecuted for Misconduct in a Public Office following the death of an inmate at HMP Liverpool. The defendant was acquitted at the close of the prosecution case following a successful submission of ‘no case’. Michael was retained for the subsequent 20 day Inquest. He has also defended in defending Prison Officers accused of Misconduct, resulting in his lay client being acquitted at the clause of the Prosecution case,
