Exchange Chambers recognised for commitment to wellbeing

June 25, 2026

Exchange Chambers has been awarded a second Certificate of Recognition from the Bar Council, reflecting its ongoing commitment to supporting the wellbeing of barristers, pupils and staff.

The award acknowledges the sustained efforts made across Chambers to promote wellbeing and a supportive working environment, alongside a wide-ranging programme of initiatives designed for members and staff.

Since first receiving recognition under the Wellbeing at the Bar scheme in 2023, Exchange Chambers has continued to strengthen its wellbeing offering. Initiatives include mentoring arrangements, funded access to counselling and psychotherapy services, a dedicated Employee Assistance Programme, menopause support, mental health first aid provision, flexible working arrangements and regular wellbeing-focused reviews and appraisals.

Wellbeing is embedded throughout Chambers, with support available at every stage of a barrister’s career. Pupils are provided with dedicated supervisors, while members are encouraged to seek confidential support from colleagues, heads of department and designated wellbeing contacts. Staff also benefit from a range of wellbeing measures, including flexible working arrangements and access to specialist support services.

Exchange Chambers has also developed a successful external mentoring scheme, helping young people from underrepresented backgrounds gain insight into the legal profession and access opportunities that may otherwise be unavailable to them.

Jonathan I’Anson, Chief Executive of Exchange Chambers, said:

“We are very pleased to receive this recognition from the Bar Council.

“Wellbeing is not something we view as a standalone initiative. It is part of the culture we are continually working to build and maintain across Chambers.

“The award reflects the commitment of our members and staff to creating an environment in which people can do their best work and feel able to access help when they need it.”

Will Waldron KC, Head of Chambers, added:

“The Bar can be a demanding profession and it is important that people feel supported throughout their careers.

“At Exchange, we place real importance on wellbeing and on creating an environment where people feel able to talk openly, seek support when they need it and maintain a healthy balance between their professional and personal lives.

“I am pleased that the work taking place across Chambers has been recognised in this way.”

The Wellbeing at the Bar Recognition Scheme is administered by the Bar Council and recognises chambers and organisations that demonstrate excellence in supporting the wellbeing of barristers and staff across the profession.
