EncroChat case goes to Court of Appeal

January 7, 2021

One of the lead cases in the EncroChat criminal litigation has, after a ruling by Mr Justice Dove following a 14 day preparatory hearing, gone to the Court of Appeal after leave to appeal was granted by the Judge due to the issues of public importance that the case raised.

Ian Whitehurst was part of the defence team, instructed by Paolo Martini of Cobleys Solicitors, who represented one of the defendants facing three counts of conspiracy to murder and one count of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs.

It is expected that the hearing will be held in the near future and the decision will have wide ranging consequences for other EncroChat cases.

Encrochat was one of the world’s largest encrypted communications services. It was estimated to have 60,000 users across Europe, including 10,000 users in the UK. The company ceased operations in June 2020.
