The King has appointed Bill Hanbury to be a Civil Circuit Judge on the advice of the Lord Chancellor, the Right Honourable Alex Chalk KC MP and the former Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, the Right Honourable The Lord Burnett of Maldon.

The former Lord Chief Justice has deployed Bill Hanbury to the North Eastern Circuit, with effect from 5 February 2024.

Bill Hanbury will be known as His Honour Judge Hanbury. He was called to the Bar (Inner Temple) in 1985. He was appointed as an Adjudicator in 2000, as a Fee-paid Tribunal Judge (Immigration and Asylum Chamber) in 2005, and as a Deputy Upper Tribunal Judge (Immigration and Asylum Chamber) in 2010.

Bill Hanbury joined Exchange Chambers in 2008 and has been based at the set’s Leeds Chambers since October 2010.  He has been consistently recommended as a leading barrister in the fields of commercial dispute resolution (with an emphasis on property law) and local government.

Said Jonathan I’Anson, Chief Executive at Exchange Chambers:

“On behalf of everyone at Exchange, I would like to congratulate Bill on his well-deserved appointment as a Civil Circuit Judge.

“Bill has been at Exchange for over fifteen years and is widely respected across Chambers.

He will be a tremendous asset to the Bench and we wish him every success in the future.”
