This year, Chambers will likely be offering one pupillage, either specialising in common-law work or in commercial/chancery work. The pupillage will likely be based in Leeds, although the preference of the successful candidate will be taken into account. Applications are invited for those interested in undertaking a pupillage in either common-law or commercial work. Applications will be considered on their merit, and a pupillage will be offered to the best candidate, regardless of whether they have applied for common-law or commercial pupillage.
Funding for each of the pupillages is £25,000 over the 12-month period. Up to £2,000 of this sum may be paid in advance during the BVC year to those to whom we make pupillage offers. We also guarantee receipts of at least £100,000 in the first two years of tenancy, by way of an interest-free loan. The evidence is that recent tenants have far exceeded this amount.
We at Exchange Chambers take pupillage very seriously, but we try to make it as enjoyable as possible. There is an ‘open-door’ policy in Chambers, meaning that although pupils will have supervisors covering specific practice areas, other members will always be around to answer questions, provide advice and offer support.
We only offer a pupillage if there is a tenancy available at the end of it.
As well as having first-rate IT facilities, pupils can take advantage of a well-stocked and regularly updated law library. Chambers subscribes to all of the main on-line legal research tools. It prides itself on being amongst the best-run in the country, and pupils will have the benefit of excellent administrative and clerking facilities. We find that this takes a lot of the pressure off pupils and allows them to concentrate on their work.

We see mini-pupillages as a vital part ofour pupillage selection process, giving participants the opportunity to experience life in Chambers and to see and undertake the kind of work they could expect during a pupillage with us. Just as we split our pupillages into common law or commercial practice, so too will mini-pupils focus on one area or the other, spending time with practitioners in that area and undertaking relevant paperwork. For that reason, we ask applicants to state when they apply in which area they would prefer to practise. Mini-pupils will undertake one piece of written work which will be assessed. Feedback will be given during the mini-pupillage, and mini-pupils will be able to meet and speak to other members of Chambers.
Applicants can elect whether they wish to undertake the mini-pupillage in Liverpool or Manchester.
