A rioter who torched a BBC broadcast van during the summer disturbances has been jailed for five-and-a-half years.
Zac Challinor, 23, who was represented by Michael Lavery from Exchange Chambers, was captured on CCTV film setting fire to the vehicle near Salford shopping precinct.
He also looted a Lidl store at the centre, damaged security shutters at William Hill bookmakers and was among a group of youths who hurled missiles at police officers.
Jailing him at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court, Judge Jonathan Foster QC, said: “I do not take you to be a hardened criminal.”
But he added: “Everybody who took part in these events contributed to the increasing fear and distress which resulted. You were not a ringleader, but your participation in itself was an encouragement to others to do likewise. Your actions were wholly irresponsible and detrimental to all who live in our great city.”
