Practice
The vast majority of my criminal practice has involved serious, complex and paper heavy cases. I have been instructed for the defence by private practice solicitors throughout the north of England in respect of all aspects of criminal work but in particular fraud. Such prosecutions have been commenced by the SFO, DTI, CPS, ARA and Trading Standards.
On at least a dozen occasions I have been instructed as leading Counsel in matters lasting from a fortnight to 4 months +.
In addition to instructions being received from private practise solicitors I have represented defendants who are member/employees of the Police Federation, Prison Officers Association, The Post Office, The Pharmacists Society, various insurance companies, Trade Unions and Healthcare providers.
I have been instructed upon matters before various tribunals and inquests such as:-
- The Privy Council;
- The General Medical Council;
- The Coroner’s Court;
- The Healthcare Professions Council;
- Police Discipline Tribunals.
During the last 15 years I have represented interested parties before the Coroner’s Court, in particular police officers where there has been a death in custody. Recently the vast majority of my regulatory work has been for the GMC. I have presented for the Council in excess of 50 FTP cases lasting from a few days to several weeks. Additionally, I have undertaken the full range of GMC hearings including IOP’s including extensions before the High Court, Investigation hearings, Registration Appeals and Reviews.
I am fully IT proficient and utilise the most up to date technology in particular Case-map which provides for greater efficiency in searching large amounts of documentation. I utilise an LSC approved time recording system.

Reported Cases:
R v Linda Staughan [2009] EWCA (Crim) 955 Instructed as leading defence counsel.
Order quashed. Necessary for Court to look at personal benefit in the case of a "mere employee". Defendant prosecuted by the SFO and convicted by a jury of fraudulent trading at Leeds Crown Court. The companies which employed the defendant and co-defendants obtained £50 million as a result of fraudulent dealings with banks. Judge found the defendant's benefit to be her share of the value of the property obtained by the companies as a result of the fraud. Held that a mere employee, as here, she could not be regarded as having obtained any part of the payment made to the campanies by the banks merely by virtue of employment - court should look whether she obtained a salary at a higher rate than market rate or level of expenses or emoluments higher than that of employees not engaged in criminal conduct. Jennings v CPS 2009 applied. Since the court did not have the relevant primary facts upon which it could make any finding, the confiscation order was quashed. Benefit has been assessed at £3.89 million and order made in the sum of £125K. Trial judge had adopted a "pragmatic approach".
