Christopher Stables
Practice
Chris Stables is an established practitioner specialising in criminal advocacy and advisory work. Called 20 years, he has wide experience in all aspects of criminal work. His practise includes both defence and prosecution work.
Defence Work is undertaken for a wide range of solicitors across Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Lancashire and Cumbria. This work spans all aspects of serious crime and includes both VHCC and graduated fee cases.
Prosecution Work includes instructions from the Crown Prosecution Service, HM Revenue and Customs, the Department for Work and Pensions and the Environment Agency. Much of this work is local to the above areas, but increasingly his prosecution work has a national basis.
He is a CPS Grade 4 Prosecutor, and is appointed to the Attorney General's 'A' List of Prosecuting Advocates, for the Northern Circuit.
All aspects of criminal work are undertaken, and his areas of expertise include:
* Large and complex fraud
* Excise, revenue and oil fraud
* Murder/manslaughter/ homicide
* Serious violence
* Drugs offences (importation, production, supply, etc)
* Serious sexual offences
In addition he undertakes and has extensive experience of conducting police disciplinary work on behalf of the Police Federation at force tribunal level and above.
Recent notable cases include:
• R v Kell, & others – 2010. Leading Junior. Defending. 4 month trial. Conspiracies to commit offences of corruption. false accounting and to pervert the course of justice. Corruption between Merseyside Police Estates Management Dept and contracting companies.
• R v Little, & others – 2009. Led Junior. Defending. Operation Savanah. Conspiracy fraudulently to evade excise duty. HMRC excise/oil fraud..
• R v Stanley – 2009. Prosecuting. Rape. Historic sexual abuse.
• R v Gardner – 2009. Defending. Attempted murder (of wife by husband).
• R v Hall, & others – 2009. Defending. Operation Greengage. Conspiracy to supply Class A drugs, firearms and ammunition.
• R v King – 2008. Prosecuting. Led Junior. Child destruction. Serious assault on pregnant mother causing death of unborn child.
• R v Williams, & others – 2007. Leading Junior. Defending.4 month conspiracy to defraud. Tried at Southwark. Complex £20M fraud upon NatWest and RBS.
• R v McCaffrey – 2007.Led Junior. Defending. Murder. Joint participation
in murder by stabbing.
• R v Hoey – 2007. Defending. Attempted murder (of police officer on duty, by multiple stabbing).
